“Tailscale is getting harder and harder to use in China — is there any reliable alternative?” Like ZeroTier, overseas networking tools such as Tailscale are increasingly falling short in Chinese enterprise scenarios. Today we’ll spell out the problems with Tailscale in China, what alternatives exist, and how enterprises should choose.
Three Problems with Tailscale in China
1. The control plane / DERP relay sits overseas. Tailscale’s coordination servers and DERP relay nodes are mainly located overseas, and domestic devices rely on them to establish connections, so at peak times you get jitter, slow handshakes and the occasional failure to connect — that’s down to the architecture, not your network.
2. Cross-border data, questionable compliance. Coordination metadata passes through overseas servers, which will not pass an audit for enterprises subject to MLPS 2.0 (China’s Multi-Level Protection Scheme) or concerned about the Data Security Law and the Personal Information Protection Law.
3. No ICP filing, no local support. When something goes wrong you can only read English documentation and raise English support tickets; it cannot be deployed compliantly in mainland China.
Tailscale Alternatives in China: How to Choose
- Enterprise-grade zero trust + compliance → we recommend sTrust (Siwenlide): control plane 100% in China, ICP-filed, MLPS-compliant, live in 5 minutes
- Technical team willing to self-host → self-host Headscale (Tailscale’s open-source control plane) or run a bare-bones self-built VPN — but you own the operations and have to keep it stable yourself
- Personal / small-team remote control → Oray Pgy multi-site networking, ToDesk and similar tools (consumer-oriented, not built for enterprise zero trust)
Why Enterprises Are Better Off with sTrust
| Dimension | Tailscale | sTrust |
|---|---|---|
| Control plane location | Overseas | Domestic data center |
| Stability in China | Medium–low | High |
| MLPS / ICP filing | Fails | Passes / filed |
| Security model | Networking-first | Zero trust with on-demand authorization |
| Chinese-language support | English only | 7×12 in Chinese |
The underlying protocols are equally mature; the difference is that sTrust puts the control plane in China, applies zero-trust on-demand authorization and supports compliance audits, making it a better fit for production use by enterprises in mainland China.
FAQ
Q: Is it a hassle to migrate from Tailscale / Headscale to sTrust?
A: Not at all. Register → configure subnet authorization → employees receive an SMS to download the client → sign in with the verification code and the configuration is pushed automatically. A 30-person company can be up and running in 2–3 hours.
Q: Does it support branch-to-branch connectivity?
A: Yes. Site-to-site is handled through MikroTik RouterOS integration, so branches can reach each other without every employee running the client.
